Stony Point Landing History

Stony Point Landing was originally a site for a stevedore named Dunbar, who established a boat landing and path up the bluff, calling it Dunbar’s hollow. When William DeWitt purchased the land in 1882, he built a hotel for travelers and locals to visit while they camped and boated around the bluff. The DeWitt family also planted apple, peach, and plum orchards along the top of the gully.

At the bottom of the bluff, a fresh water spring attracted resident boaters from around Irondequoit Bay. In 1928, the DeWitt brothers established a sand and gravel business digging sand and gravel out of the bluff’s cliffs until they became too unstable to dig any further.

In the 1930’s a new sand and gravel pit was started. Fast forward a few decades and Jay Zukowski, Jay Builders, had a dream to build a waterfront community. It took years of planning and design until he began building Stony Point Landing in the 1980’s when Irondequoit Bay opened up.

Welcome!

As a resident of Stony Point Landing, I appreciated being greeted by the welcome committee volunteers, invitations to a community wide holiday party, summer food truck picnic and more. My husband and I feel lucky to have our paddle boards and kayaks so conveniently located that we can take a spontaneous quick sojourn on the lake whenever the mood strikes.

On our walks around the neighborhood overlooking the bay and lake, we often catch site of a butterfly, flocks of gulls, great heron and egret. July 4th fireworks are a fabulous spectacle from our deck as we can view displays from several towns. Well manicured lawns, fragrant colorful spring blooms and endless skylines bring smiles to our faces as do the stunning views of the snow covered lake in winter.

All in all, a four season wonderland!

Stroll the streets, walkways & wooded paths of the neighborhood and you are likely to glimpse deer, red fox, & rabbits.
